I got a Kindle today!

It was a belated birthday gift from my family. I had sworn I was not into having one — I was a bit of a book snob — I preferred having a “real” book in my hands — turning pages and folding down a corner of a page — you know, stuff like that. Well, I got one today, and I absolutely love it.

What’s not to love about a kindle?  The latest version is small, lightweght, and has a great display that even looks like a real page of a book.  I got two chapters of a novel I was going to purchase as an electronic sample before I spent any money to buy a book.  After reading the sample, I still wanted it — the book was 1/3 of the price of a hardback book, so Iwent ahead and bought it — Freedom, by Jonathan Franzen (an Oprah’s Book Club selection — you already know how much I love Oprah!).   It has been so great reading this book — it is like someone is telling you the story in an intimate conversation rather than reading a more formal traditional novel.  I highly recommend this book, and this device!

Reading is not something that I used to do a lot of, but it has become more enjoyable to me since my physical health has forced me to do more of it.  Between the kindle, my IPOD, and this blog, I have been more able to take advantage of technology to support my life.   This is something that I have not done in the past.  My techno-geek brother is completely shocked by this development in my life — as well as the fact that at his urging I even opened up a facebook page.

There are only two things I would change about the kindle.  Highlighting passages should be easier, and it should be simpler to page through a book.  Both of these would answer the few challenges I face when reading with the kindle.  Having books as an easy option has really opened up my spirit and made it so much easier for me to get through my days at home.  I don’t get out as much as I used to,  and it doesn’t hurt that the books themselves are faurly inxpensive, so I am in love with my kindle!
